Mexico City, Wow!

We had no idea Mexico City was so lovely! Our assumption was that it was a big city with lots of food and entertainment options. To our delight, it was so much more.

We have spent the last couple of days walking around our hotel neighborhood — La Condesa; a very quaint residential area known for its cafes, restaurants, galleries and parks. It feels very much like Paris with a colorful flare.

Here are a few street scenes from our walks…

And the food!! Here are some of our favorite spots:

And, our ALL TIME favorite dinner, Rojo Bistro — a quick stroll down the boulevard from our hotel.

  • Breakfasts at Lalo’s and Ojo de Aqua

  • Coffee at Vinyl and Coffee Break

  • Lunch during ciclovia at Mallora.

  • Best ‘Act like a Digital Nomad’ place, Freims

  • Burgers at Bizarro

  • Vegan lunch at Forever Vegan

  • Thai food at Galanga

  • Craft beer at Falling Piano Brewery

  • Pizza and wine at Macelleria

  • Expensive but yummy sushi at Koku

  • And some of the best street food at the central market: roasted corn with mayonnaise dressing, tacos and cucumber lemonade

ADDITIONAL TRIP NOTES:

Sights and excursions…

  • The Diego Rivera Mural Museum - Loved it! Small but interesting display for one of his rescued murals from the Hotel del Prado, which was severely damaged in the 1985 Mexico City earthquake.

  • The Frida Kahlo Museum (see this post for more details)

  • We tested our cardio skills on a very warm 90 degree day by climbing the steps at Pyramid of the Moon at Teotihuacan Pyramids. Thankfully the lines were too long at Pyramid of the Sun, so we took a pass on that one.

  • Museum at Palacio de Bellas Artes - more of Diego Rivera’s murals. Really beautiful building, too.

  • Museum of Anthropology - Really interesting, but a little over rated in our opinion.

  • Museum of Objects - current exhibit was all about album cover graphics. Very cool.

  • After walking for over an hour from the Museum of Anthropology, we were very disappointed that we didn’t get into Luis Barragán’s House and Studio. This was a hard-learned lesson in going direct to these small museum’s websites instead of using Trip Advisor. UGH!

How long was our stay…15 days. We fell in love with Mexico City and decided to extend our stay through the new year — the beauty of slow travel.

Where we stayed…Hotel Roosevelt ($53 per day). Nice, small, but clean with good, inexpensive breakfasts.

What’s next…On to Oaxaca for more good food and Mezcal drinks!!

HO Ho Ho, Happy Holidays everyone!
