Sunday in Coyoacan

Coyoacan is a wonderful part of town, about 5 miles south of central Mexico City — widely known as the home of legendary Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo. Kelly and I decided to spend most of the day here. We were planning on biking there but woke up to 40 degree temps so we hopped into an Uber instead.

Of course our first stop was the Frida Kahlo Museum. It’s a great place to visit if you’re ever in the area. This was the artist’s birth place, family home, where she lived with husband Diego Rivera (another famous Mexican artist), and where she died.

As you stroll thought the rooms and courtyard your imagination carries you back in time. She was a remarkable woman who suffered physically throughout most of her life but managed to produce some of the most iconic Mexican surrealist art and paintings in her image. If you’re able to go, it’s best to purchase tickets in advance (as lines tend to wrap around the block), and grab the audio tour.

Afterwards, we headed across the street to Mercado Coyoacan for lunch. The local market was buzzing; full of sights and smells.

Inside is where the magic is…

The ceviche options were extraordinary!

Then, we walked across the street to check out a local art market.

It was a great day and everyone was happy to be outside soaking up the sun.
